Snail and Worm Three Stories About Two Friends Tina Kugler 9781328596451 Books Reviews

  • It takes a lot for a book to make me laugh out loud. A LOT. And when I find one that does, I want to read it over and over and over again. This is how I feel about the hilarious Snail and Worm Three Stories About Two Friends and the Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor winning Snail and Worm Again by Tina Kugler, a duo of picture books fabulous for emerging readers that we just can’t get enough of in our house right now.

In Snail and Worm, and the follow up Snail and Worm Again, the titular characters are best friends— best friends who engage in some rather silly antics. From playing tag with rocks and sticks to climbing up flowers to looking for lost pets, both kids and adults will giggle all the way through these engaging and oh-so-humorous books.

I swear, I love love love when illustrations elevate story to a whole new level. And that’s exactly what happens in the Snail and Worm books. Though some of the humor may have to be explained to really young children, kids will no doubt erupt in giggles when they realize how ironic or just plain goofy the images are when read in combination with the text. Be forewarned that the illustrations, due to their sophisticated humor, won't really help kids decode the text. Nonetheless, the chapters are short, only about 40 or 50 words each, and the dialogue is simple, making these stories perfect for emerging readers and those who want to take their first stab at “chapter” books. And laughs, I promise, are in store. Not just for your kids, but for you too. Fun, clever, and an absolute must for anyone wanting engaging books for beginning readers.
  • Snail and Worm are two great friends in the tradition of Frog and Toad or George and Martha. These deceptively simple stories are clever and honestly laugh-out-loud funny. The twists are satisfying and exceedingly smile-inducing. Kugler's happy green and bright orange-brown color palette are inviting and cheerful, and the facial expressions on the characters are hilarious. Highly recommended as a read-aloud and as an early reader. Lots to talk about in terms of expectations and friendships. New readers will feel so rewarded to be able to read something so smart and silly. I read this book to a few classes of kids and they LOVED it! Teachers and librarians! Get this book to read to students!
  • My grandson read it and asked a lot of questions because it was so silly. However, there were lots of words and it made him focus on the story and what the next page would show.
  • This book has 3 very short stories. The reading level is too low for a kid who would understand and laugh at the jokes. I bought it for my 3 year old and the jokes go right over his head. My older kids are bored by it.
  • Not much to say about this book except that it is just okay. Pretty boring. No lessons to be learned. No humor really. Even my kids were unimpressed and they love books and reading. I can just about make anything funny for them, but this fell extremely short. Received it in my monthly book box from and I'm pretty disappointed.
  • We use a deep voice for the snail, and a very high voice for the worm, my kinder is on the floor rolling. Both Snail& Worm, and Snail&Worm Again we first read at the library. We ordered them for our own library. Really funny short cute stories.
  • I received this book for my son through the Book Club Subscription. He was set for age 6-8 level books. This book is cute, but more appropriate for a 2 or 3 year old.
  • Great illustrations & storytelling by Tina Kügler. Our two year old loves this book! He loves the characters, the pictures, bright colors. He will understand more of the writing & the humor in it as he gets older. It's also great having 3 short stories in one book. As a parent, it's fun to read a book to your child that also makes YOU laugh. Definitely recommend.
