"Definitely some great information, but it is a little repetitive. I like the boxes aimed at future fathers, but I feel like the entire book should have an audience of future parents, not just future moms. I would like my husband to get all of the information, not just the boxes."

  • Okay, so to be fair, this is a manual and if you need a manual, it's great. It's not really meant for a one sitting read-through. In this respect, the prose is easy to read, the digital text organized with helpful in-text links, and it's pretty short and sweet. A doctor could probably tell you everything in this book, but there may be things you wouldn't think to bring up that'll help you prepare better than you would otherwise.

That said, if, like me, you were thinking, "Maybe I'm just not sure about getting pregnant because I need to educate myself!" and plan to read it in one sitting, don't get this book. Being a manual, this guidebook will cover all the good things, but also ALL THE HORRIBLE THINGS THAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG, and in one sitting it's exhausting and nerve-wrecking. If you're in 100%, you might feel assured having all these helpful checklists and reminders and vocabulary lists, but, if not, you might end up feeling even less ready and a bit unnerved.
  • Having a hard time getting through it because of the cutesy, tabloid-like lingo author uses. Every other sentence is a punny alliteration. It has some decent info, but it's written like a Seventeen Magazine. Some literary devices peppered in here or there would be just fine, but it's just about every single sentence.
  • The book had tons of good information in it, but it was overwhelmed with the author's constant remarks and attempts at joking. I understand it's done to relate to the consumer, but when it's literally in every other sentence, it's a bit much. If she toned it done a bit, I would've enjoyed it more.
  • I thought I was educated, but I learned so much from this book. I found this book while looking for What to Expect Your Child's First Year, which I wanted to read because I work with infants and its always nice to get more information from different places. when books are in a series, I like to read all of them, so I started with this one and will continue through the child's second year book. I didn't know what to expect from this book starting out, but I am glad I read it. I have no children and was interested in what women go through when they are pregnant, I never even thought about the before pregnancy process. The parts about hormonal changes and how to recognize them in your own body set of a light bulb above my head. I read sections out of order and reread some, Overall I really enjoyed this book. It also served as an introduction and I took some of the topics and conducted further research.
  • LOVE this book. It touches on everything!! One of my favorite things about it is that you don't have to start reading from page one. You can look at the table of contents and go straight to the chapters that you're interested in at that time. I have read this entire book several times, just not directly from one cover to the next. I should point out that I read the original edition. I have only begun reading this updated version that I love so far just as much.
  • Definitely some great information, but it is a little repetitive. I like the boxes aimed at future fathers, but I feel like the entire book should have an audience of future parents, not just future moms. I would like my husband to get all of the information, not just the boxes.
  • Most of the was "well, obviously" type of stuff. It often read as condescending.

And the formatting is so distracting.
  • Informational and concise but wish it wasn’t so redundant/ repeating so much content across the book. It was a struggle to get through, wish there was more citations/ interpretation but I did read through it all, just to be sure I didn’t miss the key points. I’m sure whoever is a first time TTC candidate can skip a major portion of this book (though if necessary, could be good starting resource if there are fertility issues to explore / options).

Soho Angel eBook Greg Keen Reviews

  • This is the third book in the series featuring Kenny Gabriel and Odeerie Charles, a duo of skip tracers who get involved in crimes far worse than than the usual dead beat dads. Kenny is a late middle-aged man who has moved from job to job and been a skip tracer for six years. He's rather down at the heels, surviving because of his successful brother's largesse; he's not successful personally, including his love life, but his involvement in a complex 20-year old missing persons case brings surprising results. He is the "legs" of the operation as Odeerie is an agoraphobiac, morbidly obese, and hasn't left his apartment in years. He is the fact-finder, the computer genius who finds the trails Kenny follows. While an unlikely pair, both are likable and believable. The crimes that are uncovered are many and serious, but Mr. Keen gives some relief by his injection of wry humor and observations through Kenny's speech and thoughts. I've read all three books in the series, and I recommend them all highly. It's best to read them in order. I, for one, will be sorry to say goodbye to Kenny and Odeerie.
  • Human nature stripped bare. Not a pretty sight.
A new angle, which means that the authour is not going stale. We are left with a cliffhanger, but I am not worried. What I am worried about is that Mr Keen will decide to do something different.
My only gripe; too little Farrelly.
  • This book stars an (nowadays at least) interesting hero. Instead of being a Macho hero who runs into an armed conflict armed with only a paper clip, we have this chain smoking, alcoholic hero who shuffles in the opposite direction. Very cleverly written, you feel sympathy for this almost reluctant hero, despite his faults.
  • Kenny Gabriel, PI, is tasked with looking into the case of missing rock star Castor Greaves and his model girlfriend. For 20 years this mystery has been a much discussed and written about story with umpteen theories. The model's mother, suddenly having come into money, is desperate to find out what happened to her daughter. Kenny's boss, an agoraphobic foodaholic, wants Kenny to solve the case. With the promise of media coverage it has the potential of attracting new clients...filling the depleted coffers of their small company.
Poor Kenny not only an impossible task trying to crack a 20-year old cold case, he also has debilitating side effects due to a brain tumor and is trying to reconnect with his ex-girlfriend, who now has a new, filthy rich and handsome boyfriend.
With important informants being killed off, several attempts on his life as well as being tortured, Kenny's life just before his hopefully lifesaving operation is almost impossible. There are so many twists and turns, I had a hard time putting my down. I really liked Kenny and was rooting for him all the way. Hopefully there will be another book to continue his story. Does he survive his operation intact, does he quit being a PI and does he get the girl? More please!

Katanga 1960-63 tells, for the first time, the full story of the Congolese province that declared independence and found itself at war with the world. The Congo had no intention of allowing the renegade region to secede, and neither did the CIA, the KGB, or the UN. The UN fielded soldiers from 20 nations, America paid the bills, and the Soviets intrigued behind the scenes. Yet to everyone’s surprise the new nation’s rag-tag army of local gendarmes, jungle tribesmen, and, controversially, European mercenaries, refused to give in. For two and a half years Katanga, the scrawniest underdog ever to fight a war, held off the world with guerrilla warfare, two-faced diplomacy, and some shady financial backing.

Read Katanga 196063 Mercenaries Spies and the African Nation that Waged War on the World Christopher Othen Books

"In pretty good chronological order, Othen, puts the beginning and destruction by the West of the only multiracial state to exist in Africa to paper. I lived there ten years after the secession, visited the site of Hammarskjold's crash, and went to the Elisabethville (Lubumbashi) post office daily. Katanga remains to this date, an occupied province. The Europeans and the West were so terrified a black man could not resist communism that they destroyed the best hope for a state in which all people of all kinds might work together. Katanga is the first but by no means the last failure of freedom. The only thing missing from the book are the anecdotes from the Katangans themselves. I knew many of the brothers and relatives of Moise Tshombe, and Jason Sendwe. The best story I know is that their wives, both Methodists, went forward in the big Methodist church on Avenue Likasi (limit Sud) and prayed together, hand in hand, during the height of their husbands' forces fighting. Many of the expats Othen named still remained in Katanga until they died. Why not? They were Katangans. Othen reveals, the mixed motives and dashed hopes of an extraordinary people caught up in the attempt to make their own nation, together. Characters are as he portrays them. What has been lost is epic . Congo , my Congo, has potential, they say. It will always have potential. But once, the South nearly realized that potential."

Katanga 196063 Mercenaries Spies and the African Nation that Waged War on the World Christopher Othen Books Reviews

  • “Katanga, 1960-63” is a very readable political and military history of the immediate post-independence war that broke out between the UN-recognized government based in Leopoldville, now Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the breakaway province, or nation at the time, of Katanga. Othen provides a brief background of the Congo’s brutal colonial history, but the meat of the book begins with Congo’s independence day. Unfortunately within days anarchy became the norm as racial vengeance, black and white, an army mutiny, and tribal wrongs devolved into violence. Murders, rapes, beatings and more became common as blacks attacked whites, and as various, normally tribal-based, political groups jockeyed for power. Within weeks the provinces of South Kasai and Katanga declared their independence. The United Nations, viewing the world through a Cold War and a Westphalian state paradigm, sided with the Leopoldville-based government of Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and President Joseph Kasa-Vubu. Then within months Kasa-Vubu and Lumumba had a falling out which led the Lumumba’s murder, only adding to the turmoil.

It was in this maelstrom of violence that Katanga’s war of independence began. Through a combination of guerrilla tactics and duplicitous diplomacy, and with the controversial use of white mercenaries, Moise Tshombe’s government held out for two years. Othen’s book is not only a linear conventional military history of the war, he also gets into the personalities of the major African and Belgian players, and mercenary leaders. He takes a look at the battles between the tribes in the area, battles against the Congolese army, and those with United Nations forces. He also gets into the politics between Congo’s major, often tribal-based, political parties before describing an end to the war which basically led to a compromise government involving all parties.

All in all a very readable history of a war that has passed into memory, but related to the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s problems today, to include a still existing, although small, insurgency in Katanga.
  • In pretty good chronological order, Othen, puts the beginning and destruction by the West of the only multiracial state to exist in Africa to paper. But once, the South nearly realized that potential.
  • This is an excellent book. Factual, thorough and well written. As one who knew some of the participants in the Katanga secession, I found Othen's retelling remarkably similar to some of the events as later described to me. Othen's narrative is rich in detail and his battle descriptions gripping reading.

However, the best of this book is the author's writing skills. He is an artist with words. He writes in a fluid manner and his descriptions of the "dramatis personae" are often irreverent and sarcastic, but always witty. I enjoyed this book and finished it in a few hours. I strongly recommend this book. I cannot wait to this author's next effort.
  • Excellent story telling in a journalistic style. The citations and footnotes are almost as interesting as the narrative. Highly recommend.
  • I thought that this is a well researched and well written book on the Congo crisis. Looking forward to reading more of the author's books.
  • Having lived in Congo over a period of years, I can attest that this book faithfully captures the atmosphere of the place, its fratricidal politics, and the schizophrenic relationship with Belgium. Furthermore it's full of fascinating details and a cast of improbable characters.
  • Great book ,properly built up ,expalining every little thing. Only complaint ,needed maps ,to give reader sense of what happened where. Also pictures corresponding to the chapters they were related to. but all in all .great.
  • Othen is an ace writer and his deep dive into a complicated and crazy episode of the Cold War/National Liberation era in Africa is well worth your time.

Magic Is Dead My Journey into the World Most Secretive Society of Magicians Audible Audio Edition Ian Frisch Charlie Thurston HarperAudio Books Reviews

  • This isn't the worst book I have ever read, but I would have returned it if the return window on kindle products isn't so small.

I don't know what this book is about. If I was asked to describe it it would be "a year in the life of some guy named Ian, but also about his childhood and parents, and sometimes about his hip magician friends and occasionally about the history of magic, but mostly about some guy named Ian." I started the book curious about what "the52" is, and now that I have finished it I still have no idea what it is other than 52 people with sometimes vague connections to the magic world who have a card tattooed on their finger. Could have learned the same from a photo caption.

The history of magic part, while being the smallest piece of the content pie graph was by far the most interesting. Also I had never heard of any of these magicians and discovering a couple on youtube was cool; Shin Lim in particular was pretty mind-blowing.

I really hated how the author was unable to tell any stories without refocusing the story on himself. Like when he was describing one magician, "She also performed a two-card transposition; a trick that I can also do." Who cares man , you are describing someone else. My favorite was when he is describing browsing comments from his friends' instagrams and that people had begun noticing him in the background. He says, "...people would be asking who I was; some kids even said they thought I was cool." LOL what?

And then I audibly gasped when in the final chapter he described a video his friend released that had he described as having music that was, "A cover of Johnny Cash's 'Hurt'...." Seriously? No one edited this? Johnny Cash covered the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt," arguably their most famous song after "Closer." How did THAT make it past the screeners?

I was interested in the book because I thought it would be a journey into this new world of magic that I was unfamiliar with but sounded really cool. It ended up basically being part autobiography, part "wacky adventures with Ian & friends," and occasional magic history lesson. Not at ALL what I expected.
  • I love magic books and books about magic, so when this one popped up on my recommendations it was an easy decision. It's a memoir of a journalist reporting on magic who becomes obsessed with the art, eventually becoming a magician himself and publishing his own trick.

I liked the introduction to the 'new breed' of magic. I started following magic 20 years ago and still favor reading the classics, but this really made me interested in learning more about some of the new creators out there. The stories about different tricks he witnessed, and even the how-to's, were all really well done. Also, the author did a great job of weaving his personal life story into this work, and all of the personal pieces were some of the best writing.

However, I didn't like a few things about this. The most jarring example is that the dialogue came across as very unnatural at times. Can't put my finger on exactly why, but it was enough to distract from the story. It sounded like someone trying to recall a conversation and just not quite nailing it. I also didn't like the way the book was marketed or the subtitle. Secret society feels like a stretch. the52 was a central part of the book, but I felt like it should have been a side note compared to everything else going on.

Last, I can't imagine that someone who doesn't already really like magic would like this. It's not a great start for the general public. Good book if you already love magic, probably not the best one to start with if you don't. One book that I think bridged that gap well and still told an interesting story was Alex Stone's Fooling Houdini if you are looking for a book to start with.

Impressive story, author did a great job. Recommended if you like magic already.
  • This book is fantastic, wether you are a fan of magic or not. Ian paints a vivid picture of this world he got rolled into and takes you with him every step of the way on this "adventure". Getting to know more about some of my favorite people in the Magic industry is just an added benefit. His writing is phenomenal- I don't remember the last time I laughed out loud reading. You feel all the things he wants you to feel- sadness, excitement, humor, accomplishment, ambition... It runs the gammit of the emotional spectrum in the best possible way. I HIGHLY recommend!
  • This book is more about the author's exploits with his wacky friends. I found it totally boring.
  • My dad was a magician and magic enthusiast, so I've grown up on the periphery of that hobby/business (albeit not the hip new scene described in this book). I guess it's a generational thing, but I found this memoir of the author's initiation into "the52", an ostensible secret society of magic's new wave stars, to be kind of a slog. It's not that the current generation of magicians have invented curated personas - magicians have always done that sort of thing, by the nature of their work - but, like the Instagram campaigns and publicity stunts described herein, the results are mostly slick and superficial.
  • I really wanted to like this book but the more I got into it the more I was put off. It was a look way to go for a magic trick!
  • I've been waiting for this book for a few months now. When it finally showed up I immediately spent a few hours in it. After reading the prologue, I was immediately hooked. I expected in the beginning to immediately get hooked into the magic, but with the information on Ian's background, I felt even more connected and eager to continue reading. Highly recommended.
  • This book details a writer's journey through the mystery and unknown of the underground magic scene. From touching the hearts of the reader through stories of his childhood, to detailing his beginnings as a magician, this book has inspired me to further my knowledge of magic as an art. This book is perfect for magicians and non-magicians. No knowledge in the field of magic is required to understand the contents of this book. In fact, it is perfect for those interested in beginning his or her journey into the world of magic. 10/10 recommend this read.

Laureato all'Università di Genova, tiene regolarmente lectures e corsi presso istituzioni culturali e università negli Stati Uniti (New York University, Stony Brook University, Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, University of Illinois), in Argentina e Uruguay, in Francia e Italia. Tra i suoi libri recenti Controsole. Fabrizio De André e Crêuza de mä (Arcana, Roma 2011) e L'ultimo giorno di Luigi Tenco (Giunti, Firenze 2015). Ha scritto anche per il teatro e la televisione.
