Socrate lui-même a dit

The Shake 'n Bake Sergeant True Story of Infantry Sergeants in Vietnam eBook Jerry Horton Reviews

  • I also was a shake n bake infantry squad leader with E Co. 1/7th Cav. Div. (Airmobile) in 1972. This book was a great way to show what we went through when we got to Vietnam. The Army needed instant leadership for this war. I knew exactly what the author went through in NCOC school at FT. Benning Ga. It was a great read for any grunt from the Vietnam war.
  • I enjoyed this account of A company 1st battalion 8th Infantry of the 4th Infantry Division. It was good to hear it from a shake and bake perspective. I have read a couple dozen biographies from the Vietnam War, mainly Army but some Marine also. This is a good one. Horton tells us about the every day grunt, the man in the foxhole or bunker, the man on patrol and that is what I am looking for. I have only two complaints the first is that story is disjointed and the second is the lack of maps or drawing embedded in the stories. I like to visualize how everything is playing out and it is really hard without aid. As for being disjointed I prefer to read what happened to each group of men in a continuous story rather than parts of the story as it happens throughout the day and night. By the time you get around to finishing your story about the tracers I have trouble remembering where they are and what they have been through.
  • I served in Vietnam in the same company, A-1-8, as SGT Horton albeit several months later. However, I was fortunate not to have experienced combat as severe as that which Horton describes here. His combat accounts are vivid and well worth the read.

Nevertheless, there are about 200 pages to get through before that combat. Then roughly 150 pages are dedicated to the single battle which is the crux of the book. This is followed by another 100 pages of addendum on the March 1969 campaign. The middle section is engrossing.

If you read this book to discover what is was like to be an infantryman in Vietnam, you will be rewarded. If, however, you expect a history of the Army's shake 'n' bake sergeants you will be disappointed; this is strictly one man's story. As noted by others, the book is in dire need of a competent editor.

This book is much like the war it describes, lackluster until the fighting begins. None of that should diminish the sheen of SGT Horton's two Silver Stars nor the obvious depth of research that he put into producing this book. I'm sure that it was a labor of love. And every account of the history of the Vietnam experience is important.
  • Very informative accounts of actions while serving in the Republic of Vietnam. Horton tells of his life before, during, and after his actions in combat while serving as Sergeant 1968 to 1969. This is a very detailed account of all he experienced and all he witnessed while in county. One of the better reads of service in Vietnam!
  • Since the end of the Vietnam War, a plethora of books has been written by veterans trying to make sense out of the quagmire that American found itself in during the 1960s and early 1960s. Each one of these personal accounts of the war offers unique insights and at times for the veterans writing them, they are cathartic in many ways for these veterans old ghosts are finally laid the rest and emotional scars healed.

What makes Jerry Horton's memoir of the war, The Shake 'n Bake Sergeant, memorable and poignant is that he describes how he became a part of the Army's program to fast-track personnel to become squad leaders to replace personnel wounded or killed. Horton has to overcome all sorts of obstacles, not the least of which is earning the respect of his men who must be led by a sergeant who has no combat experience.

This is a powerful book of war and the camaraderie between "grunts" who watch out for each other. Although the expression, "I couldn't put this book down" might be overused by reviewers, it is most definitely apropos here. There's this slow, suspenseful build to Horton's memoirs as you follow him and his men into the bush where danger is all around. And when the fighting starts, you are right there in the middle of it, feeling the danger and hoping that Horton and his men survive.

Thank you, Mr. Horton, for telling your story and the story of your men.

    Jeffrey Miller,
    The Panama Affair
  • After reading literally hundreds of first-person accounts of ground combat in Vietnam, Mr Horton’s book is in my personal top five and I would warmly recommend it to anyone wishing to understand both the physical and emotional journey the combat soldier goes through in a war as well as the spiritual journey he endures in the “peace” after.
This book and this man’s life brings my favorite poem to mind
    You cannot pick your battlefields;
    God does that for you
But you can plant a standard
    Where a standard never flew.
    Well done, soldier, well done!

Let Play Two The Legend of Mr Cub the Life of Ernie Banks eBook Ron Rapoport Reviews

  • Got it for a gift. I’ll read it after the recipient.
  • Ron Rapoport has written a brilliant biography of an important man, Ernie Banks. Rapoport captures the essence of Mr. Cub, a complicated, self-made star who touched a generation of baseball fans.
  • Pleasant read.
  • Until the Braves moved to Milwaukee, the Cubs were "my" team and Ernie Banks was my hero. I kept all of his stats and is some way he helped instill in me a deep commitment to Civil Rights.

"I kept my mouth shut but tried to make a difference. My whole life, I've just wanted to make people better".

Later I went to Mississippi to do legal work in behalf of the movement, and some of my associates felt he should have been more outspoken. I disagreed -- he led for me by quiet example.

These words capture a great deal about the man that I admired, not only as a Cubbie, but as a man

"My philosophy about race relations is that I'm the man and I'll set my own patterns in life. I don't rely on anyone else's opinions. I look at a man as a human being; I don't care about his color. Some people feel that because you are black you will never be treated fairly, and that you should voice your opinions, be militant about them. I don't feel this way. You can't convince a fool against his will ... If a man doesn't like me because I'm black, that's fine. I'll just go elsewhere, but I'm not going to let him change my life."

This well written, deeply researched book is a real pleasure to read. It brought back many memories, and it taught me a great deal about a boyhood hero -- a hero even now that I am 82.

    Robert C. Ross
    March 2019
  • Ernie Banks had an oddly-timed career and was an unlikely success. He didn't start playing ball until his mid-teens, had very little formal instruction, spent a bit of time playing for the dying Negro Leagues, and then found himself -- boom! -- in 1953, one of the first generation of black major leaguers. Thus, we have someone with exceptional athletic abilities who was a sponge (he learned while doing.) And he was green! And rural! (He spent a year picking cotton instead of going to school.)

Rapoport does a brilliant job explaining why Banks naturally became the ideal "company man" for the Cubs franchise -- a talent for the ages, yes, but also an unflagging booster, devoted to the idea of team, ever-smiling and never-problematic. Not exactly a superstar for the 1960's and 70's.

The prose here is lean. The research is sold. We get it all the glory years as a dominant shortstop who hit for power, the rise and fall of the late 1960's Cubs, his transition into glad-handing ex-player, his troubled personal relationships, and, yes, his disappointments and bitterness and personal weaknesses. It is shame that Banks didn't live long into old age. He would have been a compelling elder statesman whose ideas about color and fame and achievement and business could have creeped out a bit in his later years.
  • Maybe the years have rolled by and nowadays there might be many who don’t know who said those words and the impact they had on baseball and the nation. To me, they epitomized the character of a fantastic ballplayer, one I thoroughly enjoyed as I spent my youth in the suburbs of Chicago. I still remember my father telling me that even if the rest of the team wasn’t hitting, you could count on Ernie Banks regularly swatting balls out of the park.

Author Ron Rapoport hits a grand slam with his book on Ernie. “Let’s Play Two” is a revealing look at not only a talented athlete, but the man who quietly gave so many years to the Chicago Cubs, a team that spent most of his career out of contention. The book is amazing, and the extensive list of sources – interviews and publications -- explains why.

Along the way, Mr. Rapoport fleshes out the story in many directions. Ernie Banks was brought to the Cubs in the early days when most players were white and fans were still not used to black players on the roster. The author does not shy away from the racism, and recounts numerous stories that are hard to believe 55-65 years later. Players like Banks quietly took the abuse and internalized it.

The glory and the pain of 1969 is relived, bringing back the memories that evince flashes of a rollercoaster ride that climbed to such heights and then swiftly rocketed back down to the bottom. While we see Ernie on this trip, there are plenty of moments that help us to understand the make-up of Cubs roster as well as the rest of the league.

Overall, an informative book that provides plenty of backdrop to help explain the central character. Ernie Banks was a hometown hero and the player that every team in the league wanted to have. Mr. Rapoport artfully explains this in what is probably the best sports biography I have ever read. Five stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and Hachette Books for an advance complimentary copy of this book.
  • Although I am not a Cubs fan, I can't resist a good baseball bio. Ron Rappoprt gives us a great story in Let's Play Two The Legend of Mr. Cub, the Life of Ernie Banks. Banks grew up in Texas and seemed to fall almost accidentally into baseball as a profession. In fact, his whole life seems rather passive, letting things happen and seeming not to mind when they go badly. On the surface, he seemed like the epitome of an easy going guy who went with the flow. But after a while, you realize he was angry. It's a surprise because Banks never displayed his angry side to the public, but it's also not a surprise, because he had to put up with a lot and it would make anyone angry. In addition to learning about Banks the man and the baseball player, there's plenty of interesting background about the evolution of baseball in the second half of the 20th century and life in Chicago and on the road for a Major Leaguer.

The Black River Chronicles The Ursvaal Exchange Black River Academy Volume 2 Audible Audio Edition David Tallerman Digital Fiction Connor Jones Digital Fiction Publishing Corp Books Reviews

  • I enjoyed the first of the Black River Chronicles and was looking forward to the second book. When the Ursvaal Exchange came I quickly ordered it. I was impressed with how the characters had to adapt to a different situation & succeed at doing so growing along the way. Other characters join their journey and I find myself wondering what's next?? This has the makings of a good series & as a rule I don't like series so if an author can keep my interest that says a lot about David Tallerman.
  • I read the first and enjoyed it enough to continue on. I love how fun the book. It struggles in terms of character development but makes up for it in good action and the enjoyable plot. I just hope the writer decide to explore the different characters, races, and the world the story takes place in further in future installments. I want more of the explanations like sudra syn and tia's mother but applied to the other characters and possibly new characters.
  • Loved the sequel. Still like the premise of a book written with RPG characters, it’s cool. Wish the author would continue this!
  • Yep, awsome. Gives some good inspiration for my D&D sessions.
Can't wait for the next one! Ugh why do I have to put so many words in my review?
  • liked the book good series
  • If you are a fan of RPG video games and Dungeons and Dragons this book is for you. Let yourself inmerse in this fantastic narrative.
  • Good story
  • Anxiously awaiting the next book. I liked how the main character had to transfer to a different school and he had to change from a Ranger to a Bard. That was a good way to maintain a familiar storyline but keep it new.

Snail and Worm Three Stories About Two Friends Tina Kugler 9781328596451 Books Reviews

  • It takes a lot for a book to make me laugh out loud. A LOT. And when I find one that does, I want to read it over and over and over again. This is how I feel about the hilarious Snail and Worm Three Stories About Two Friends and the Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor winning Snail and Worm Again by Tina Kugler, a duo of picture books fabulous for emerging readers that we just can’t get enough of in our house right now.

In Snail and Worm, and the follow up Snail and Worm Again, the titular characters are best friends— best friends who engage in some rather silly antics. From playing tag with rocks and sticks to climbing up flowers to looking for lost pets, both kids and adults will giggle all the way through these engaging and oh-so-humorous books.

I swear, I love love love when illustrations elevate story to a whole new level. And that’s exactly what happens in the Snail and Worm books. Though some of the humor may have to be explained to really young children, kids will no doubt erupt in giggles when they realize how ironic or just plain goofy the images are when read in combination with the text. Be forewarned that the illustrations, due to their sophisticated humor, won't really help kids decode the text. Nonetheless, the chapters are short, only about 40 or 50 words each, and the dialogue is simple, making these stories perfect for emerging readers and those who want to take their first stab at “chapter” books. And laughs, I promise, are in store. Not just for your kids, but for you too. Fun, clever, and an absolute must for anyone wanting engaging books for beginning readers.
  • Snail and Worm are two great friends in the tradition of Frog and Toad or George and Martha. These deceptively simple stories are clever and honestly laugh-out-loud funny. The twists are satisfying and exceedingly smile-inducing. Kugler's happy green and bright orange-brown color palette are inviting and cheerful, and the facial expressions on the characters are hilarious. Highly recommended as a read-aloud and as an early reader. Lots to talk about in terms of expectations and friendships. New readers will feel so rewarded to be able to read something so smart and silly. I read this book to a few classes of kids and they LOVED it! Teachers and librarians! Get this book to read to students!
  • My grandson read it and asked a lot of questions because it was so silly. However, there were lots of words and it made him focus on the story and what the next page would show.
  • This book has 3 very short stories. The reading level is too low for a kid who would understand and laugh at the jokes. I bought it for my 3 year old and the jokes go right over his head. My older kids are bored by it.
  • Not much to say about this book except that it is just okay. Pretty boring. No lessons to be learned. No humor really. Even my kids were unimpressed and they love books and reading. I can just about make anything funny for them, but this fell extremely short. Received it in my monthly book box from and I'm pretty disappointed.
  • We use a deep voice for the snail, and a very high voice for the worm, my kinder is on the floor rolling. Both Snail& Worm, and Snail&Worm Again we first read at the library. We ordered them for our own library. Really funny short cute stories.
  • I received this book for my son through the Book Club Subscription. He was set for age 6-8 level books. This book is cute, but more appropriate for a 2 or 3 year old.
  • Great illustrations & storytelling by Tina Kügler. Our two year old loves this book! He loves the characters, the pictures, bright colors. He will understand more of the writing & the humor in it as he gets older. It's also great having 3 short stories in one book. As a parent, it's fun to read a book to your child that also makes YOU laugh. Definitely recommend.

Syria is now one of the most important countries in the world for the documentary film industry. Since the 1970s, Syrian cinema masters played a defining role in avant-garde filmmaking and political dissent against authoritarianism. After the outbreak of violence in 2011, an estimated 500,000 video clips were uploaded making it one of the first YouTubed revolutions in history.

This book is the first history of documentary filmmaking in Syria. Based on extensive media ethnography and in-depth interviews with Syrian filmmakers in exile, the book offers an archival analysis of the documentary work by masters of Syrian cinema, such as Nabil Maleh, Ossama Mohammed, Mohammed Malas, Hala Al Abdallah, Hanna Ward, Ali Atassi and Omar Amiralay. Joshka Wessels traces how the works of these filmmakers became iconic for a new generation of filmmakers at the beginning of the 21st century and maps the radical change in the documentary landscape after the revolution of 2011. Special attention is paid to the late Syrian filmmaker and pro-democracy activist, Bassel Shehadeh, and the video-resistance from Aleppo and Raqqa against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and the Islamic State. An essential resource for scholars of Syrian Studies, this book will also be highly relevant to the fields of media & conflict research, anthropology and political science.

The F*ck It Diet is not only hilarious, it is scientifically and medically sound. A must read for any chronic dieter.” –Christiane Northrup, MD, New York Times bestselling author of  Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom”

From comedian and ex-diet junkie Caroline Dooner, an inspirational guide that will help you stop dieting, reboot your relationship with food, and regain your personal power

DIETING DOESN’T WORK

Not long term. In fact, our bodies are hardwired against it. But each time our diets fail, instead of considering that maybe our ridiculously low-carb diet is the problem, we wonder what’s wrong with us. Why can’t we stick to our simple plan of grapefruit and tuna fish??? Why are we so hungry? What is wrong with us??? We berate ourselves for being lazy and weak, double down on our belief that losing weight is the key to our everlasting happiness, and resolve to do better tomorrow. But it’s time we called a spade a spade Constantly trying to eat the smallest amount possible is a miserable way to live, and it isn’t even working. So fuck eating like that.

In The F*ck It Diet, Caroline Dooner tackles the inherent flaws of dieting and diet culture, and offers readers a counterintuitively simple path to healing their physical, emotional, and mental relationship with food. What’s the secret anti-diet? Eat. Whatever you want. Honor your appetite and listen to your hunger. Trust that your body knows what it is doing. Oh, and don’t forget to rest, breathe, and be kind to yourself while you’re at it.  Once you get yourself out of survival mode, it will become easier and easier to eat what your body really needs—a healthier relationship with food ultimately leads to a healthier you.

An ex-yo-yo dieter herself, Dooner knows how terrifying it can be to break free of the vicious cycle, but with her signature sharp humor and compassion, she shows readers that a sustainable, easy relationship with food is possible.

Irreverent and empowering, The F*ck It Diet is call to arms for anyone who feels guilt or pain over food, weight, or their body. It’s time to give up the shame and start thriving. Welcome to the F*ck It Diet. Let’s Eat.

  • I actually cancelled my preorder because I didn't want another diet book. Then I kept seeing on IG how funny and life changing the book was for many people so I ordered it again. I was hesitant...I wanted to just feel free around food. Was this book going to be the answer or just another diet? Then I started reading...then I started crying. I was overwhelmed with emotion and all I could do was cry. I related to everything in this book especially the 40 packs of gum a day the Minnesota Experiment people ate because they were starving. I was so happy to see that the hunger scale is not used when it comes to this. That hunger scale has caused me many nightmares and panic attacks over the years. Throwing it out is liberating. I'm on page 85 and I feel so different already. I allowed myself to eat yesterday and a crazy thing happened, I actually felt energized and stress free. I also took my scale and threw it in the trash. The best $100 I have ever thrown away. If you have ever struggled at all with your relationship to food, read this book. After all, you've already tried everything...why not just try this too. I bet it will be different. It already is for me.
  • As an Non-Diet Registered Dietitian, I found this book to be extremely scientifically sound. Caroline found the perfect balance of presenting evidence based information and explaining tough concepts in a down to earth manner. This is a must read for anyone struggling with food and body!
  • This book and Caroline’s teachings changed my life. I’m a different person today because of her and everything that I’ve learned here. After 2 years of being on TFID, I’m still endlessly beaming inside every day about how wonderful, easy, fulfilling, exciting, healthy, and gratifying my relationship with food is. There was a massive shift in my life when I started applying the physical, emotional, and spiritual principles that can all be found in this book. Thank you Caroline, for everything that you do and for this book!
  • Today I did the good kind of binging and binge read this book. I’ve struggled with food issues my whole life. I’ve tried intuitive eating before, but I never was able to fully get it. This isn’t that. I feel like I’ve been going through life holding my breath looking for the perfect diet to “fix me” After reading this book I feel like I’m finally able to exhale. I highly recommend this book! It’s the only “diet” I will ever go on again.
  • I could not put this book down, and like my title suggests, I'm mostly overwhelmed by how obvious the Author's advice should be. It was a self-helpy book that was actually thorough and well-written. She made her points clear in every chapter, and included studies (omg footnotes!) to back up her assertions. I felt like I had clear takeaways, and the exercises included in each section were deep, real, and thoughtful. I actually look forward to doing them and think they will be helpful.

Like a good self-help book should provoke, I also had more questions after I finished reading than when I started. Why am I so fatphobic? Why is our society of excess so obsessed with restriction and control? Is pressuring women (but really it's not just women) to be skinny just another veil of misogyny? I want to share this book with everyone.
  • SO. GOOD.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is fat and thinks they need to lose weight, thinks they’re fat and that they need to lose weight, is thin and thinks they need to lose weight. Or loves anyone who is struggling with the above.

Funny, relatable, sad all at the same time.
  • This book is good. So, so good. Just like all of the awesome food you get to enjoy at the recommendation of your body after you read it. Like, legit hits the spot in fulfilling that craving that you didn’t even realize you had because you’ve been so conditioned *not* to acknowledge it.

If you, or anyone you know eats food, you should definitely read it and recommend it to others who also eat food. Anyone who has to eat food should know about this book. Especially the ones who worry whether they should eat food or not....

    ****Spoiler alert****
The answer is to eat food AND LOVE IT BECAUSE IT KEEPS YOU ALIVE!
  • I got this book on a whim. I ran across the TFID on Instagram on the explore page (hiding in the cracks of weight loss and model photos), and it really spoke to me. It was the first movement I’ve seen that has no rules or guidelines. I have been struggling for the last 5 years. I’ve yo-yo dieted in and out of every diet there is. I usually resort back to very low caloric intake (1200-1500). The last year I have developed a severe binging disorder and thought that if I could just get the weight back off it would go away. It’s gotten much worse. I preordered this book as a last hope.
I am somewhere between page 80-100 and yesterday I was able to eat freely, without binging, for the first time in over a year! I know by the end of this book I will truly have a new mindset toward food. This book is liberating!! It is truly a saving grace.

When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree Jamie LB Deenihan Lorraine Rocha 9781454923817 Books Reviews

  • I've excitedly anticipated this book's arrival on my doorstep and I am so in love with it. The bright and colorful cover is so inviting and is followed by art on every page that adds to the humor and heart of a fun story. My kids and I have loved studying the endpapers and interior art and talking about the details that add to the story. The high-quality design and production includes great printing on quality paper and satisfying spot gloss on the jacket. A real book-shelf treasure!

Through the story and author's note, this book can be a great springboard for talking about the lemons in our life, and how, through hard work and the support of a loving community, we can turn them into...lemonade. This is one I won't mind reading to my children and students again and again.
  • I loved this book! With a light but beautifully effective and child-friendly touch, Deenihan conveys multiple messages. Don't be rude to Grandma when she gives you a birthday gift that is not on your carefully curated wish list. Take care of living things, in this case Lola the lemon tree. Have fun with what you've got- lemons! Put down the electronics. Share. You can make a difference.
The main character, a little girl, has no name, so the emphasis is on her actions. The second person voice is engaging, speaking directly to the reader, involving you in the action. Grandma gets the story rolling and helps with the lemonade but the little girl is very much self-directed.
The illustrations pair perfectly with the story and add extra layers. You see diversity and inclusivity in the neighborhood and you see the children putting down the robot dog, cell phone, drone, etc. and choosing to engage with one another in the beautiful garden. In case you didn't know, Deenahan and Rocha have another book on the way When Grandpa Gives You a Toolbox. Check the end papers at the back of ...Lemon Tree for a glimpse of Grandpa's truck pulled up at the curb.
  • You know you have something special in your hands when you read it over and over and can’t wait to read it again ! This book made me want to go out and buy a lemon tree for all the children in my life . What a wonderful story of family and love, made even more fun by the absolutely amazing illustrations. This will be a treasure in our home and shared with every child who walks through the door .
  • This debut book by Jamie L. B. Deenihan is hilarious and heartwarming. She takes the second person POV in an entire new level with a character and plot that's relatable and fun. The whimsical illustrations paired with carefully chosen words make this the kind of book you'll want to re-read. I also love how Jamie Deenihan expertly inserts the best kind of character arc-the MC goes from Lemon Tree skeptic to garden enthusiast in a satisfying progression that makes sense.
  • Adorable! It’s heart-warming, community-building, and funny all at once!

    What a great debut!
  • First off the colors of the cover are the first thing that draw you to the book! The cover is so colorful and inviting and who doesn’t love a story about gramma? Then you open the book and every page is filled with so much detail that you just stare at the pages and don’t want to turn to the next because you are afraid you might miss a small added detail! The story, what a fun and creative story! It is funny and an important life lesson especially today. To appreciate the little simple things in life because they can give you so much more fulfillment! Jamie and Lorraine made a great pairing on this picture book!
  • This story is delightful, funny and realistic. The art is adorable. One of best new picture books I've read in a while.
  • Love everything about this book. The voice is so fun/punchy and the illustrations of Grandma are terrific. I currently teach 3 year olds - the book feels a little too old for my class but I think it would work perfectly for 4-7.

The Complete Book of Dragons A Guide to Dragon Species How to Train Your Dragon Cressida Cowell 8601416316581 Books Reviews

  • First off, if you found this review helpful in your decision-making, please click on the helpful button so this review may help others in their decision-making process.

Cute book that highly resembles being written by the character (Hiccup) from the movie. Book is hardcover and feels like a good, quality build that will last through some punishment from a 7 year old. Looked so interesting that I decided to get 2, 1 for me and 1 for my daughter. She loves it and takes it to school for her and her friends to view during recess on a rainy day. However, I personally wish there was a little more of a detailed description for each individual dragon, instead of 1-2 sentences (see photo). Overall, she really likes it and thats all that matters, so I would recommend this book for any child who loves the movies/tv show.
  • Super neat book, my son loved it! It is illustrated cutely and goes into different types of dragons, their speed level and attack level, etc with a little description on the dragon.
My only issue is that I was a bit disappointed to realize that this isn't quite like the book of dragons seen in the movie How To Train Your Dragon. This book was written prior to the movie and the movie is based off of this series of books, but takes liberty with changing some of the characters and dragons.
In this book Toothless is not a Night Fury, but is a small little hunting dragon.
The movies (and tv series) separate the dragons by classes and this book doesn't do that.
Even though it wasn't what I was expecting it's still a neat little book. Any dragon loving boy would probably enjoy it.
  • When we checked it out from the library, we realized how well-liked this book was because about 8 pages were falling out. Had to return it so we didn't make it worse, so my 6-year-old daughter got it at Christmas and pretty much hasn't put it down since. There's a lot of scripty writing, so your kiddo has to be okay reading that. Was also a great transition to the Cowell "HTTYD" books. Before reading this one, daughter was more interested in the movie version of things. But since picking this up and learning about ALL the dragons and seeing it more in the original context, she's started eating up the books. I get taught a lot more about dragons than I ever thought possible.
  • I bought this for my son's 6th birthday. He tosses everything else to the side when he saw this book. He is glued to it. He believes it's real and can't stop reading. It's a beautiful book, great quality, looks like it's written and illustrated by a kid which makes it more believable to him. I'd buy this over and over again. It is perfection.
  • I bought this for my son for Christmas because when a book says it's a total species guide I assume it will be broke down like dinosaur books. You know the ones that have different dinosaurs on each page and it has all the facts and details about each specific dinosaur. Yeah, that is not how this book is. It's a bunch of random stuff and even when it does break down eggs and some other stuff Night furys aren't even listed and that's the MAIN dragon in How to Train Your Dragon. My son was super disappointed when we went to read it and there wasn't even a detailed page of each dragon.
  • My six-year-old how to train your dragon lover, loves this book. He spends so much time studying the images and reading it. I think he likes this whole series so much because the dragons can be scary, but they can also be trained. It is one big metaphor for overcoming your fears. He even used this when he has a bad dream -- he simply "trains" whatever it is in his dream that he is afraid of. While he is not reading the chapter books yet, he enjoyed the first move and has been reading the "Ready to Read" books in this series. This book was a great addition.
  • For the last year or so my granddaughter has been facinited with dragons. Especially the movies HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 1 AND 2.Being somewhat of a purist where books are concerned, I was curious about the origin books written by Cressida Cowell. Leah is very smart and like her Nana likes to check things out. The original work is quite a bit different from the Dreamworks version. Leah has spent hours looking at the book and having her Mom read the stories. She loves to pick out the differences and find out more about the "real" dragons. I recommend these books to any parent/child who like the Dreamworks version.
  • This was a Christmas gift for our daughter. This book has been towed around everywhere she has been the past 5 months. It has been left open, had very large papers and bookmarks left in it, and been left outside by accident. Fortunately, this book has a quality binding that has withstood the hard use. Our daughter loves the gorgeous images and information on the pages. She is inspired to draw her own dragons!
